History of NBMMG
Here's our backstory.
Here's our backstory.
The New Bern Maritime Modelers Guild was formed in 2018 with 23 prospective members attending the first meeting which was held at the Shop Class Building located in New Bern, N.C.
The main goal of the club is to help members or modelers of ship models with their various projects and promote the hobby as a whole in modeling. The Guild has models from sailing vessels to warships and rescue craft that constitutes many of the projects but also has an interested following of some members of “Down East Fishing” vessels which have graced the State and contributed to the fishermen’s way of life here in eastern N.C.
As the Guild has grown, the influence of research, and history of a vessel has grown as an important part of the project at hand. That area of the growth has led to expanding into repair, restoration, and commission building of various types of vessels. Notably, a restoration of an 83-year-old model of the Battleship North Carolina, BB 55 that was produced 1.5 years before the actual ship was launched just after our entry into the second World War.
Our Guild has been fortunate to have acquired a small library of books, articles, and modeling tools that have benefited members with their projects. A monthly newsletter has been ongoing for the past couple of years, and this introduction of our guild will highlight the new website that is officially launched.
Meetings include presentations of “how to build”, to information on meets by other clubs in the immediate area, such as a group located in Rocky Mount, N.C. who constructs large scale radio control, (1/96 scales) of warships, freighters and tankers. This group has fun runs at Rocky Mount Lake to provide ongoing trial runs of new projects, and promote the R/C hobby.
NBMMG also supports the Beaufort Maritime Museum, and their modeling club.
If you are interested in joining our group whether local or out of town, please send a request and we will be happy to contact you regarding the options you have.
